Gold Coast Candy

Taj won. He's on a roll. I don't think he ever looked as good as Dane or Bede during their best heats, but Taj is consistently solid. Unfortunately for Americans, Jordy is on a bit of a roll also. He took out both Kelly and Dane who had both been completely on fire in prior heats.

I maintain that Round 1 elimination is bad for the fans and the sport. However, when the top 4 surfers in the WCT points race are all RND 1 losers, Kelly, Mick, and Joel might disagree.

Eliminate Round 1 Elimination!

Last year some of the World Championship Tour, WCT, events went to a single elimination round one. While some meat eating competition purists like Scott Bass prefer the single elimination, having a “losers” Round 2 is better for the fans. Here are a few reasons why.

Taj Burrow
CJ Hobgood
Bobby Martinez
Damien Hobgood
Dane Reynolds
Jordy Smith
Kieren Perrow
Fredrick Patacchia
Dean Morrison
Kai Otton
Kekoa Bacalso
Mick Campbell
Patrick Gudauskas
Daniel Ross
Andy Irons
Luke Stedman

Recognize any names? If you follow pro surfing at all, you have a couple favorites on that list. Those surfers are the Round 2 winners who for whatever reason lost in their 3 man Round 1 heat at the Quicksilver Pro Gold Coast 2010. In fact, Taj, Bobby, Kai, Dane, & Jordy have now advanced to the Quarter Finals.

Ultimately, fans who are also consumers pay the tab for Pro Surfing just as they do for all pro sports. Events are Webcast from the far Eastern and Western parts of the world. These events are scheduled over waiting periods so the actual days of competition are dependent on the swell and conditions, as it should be. And… most fans have jobs or school. The result at the beginning of last year was tuning into the webcast after work to find out they started the event and, by the way, your favorite surfer is out. Surfing has so many variables; more than any other sport I know. Round two adds some stability to the competion. The cost is that the event is a little longer which really just means more surfing for the fans and sponsors. If our favorite surfers loses two heats in a row, so be it- 33rd place, but if they claw their way through the loser’s round and on to a strong result, that is good for the fans and the sport of surfing.
